Screaming Eagle is the signature name for James Locklear-Brooks, an incarcerated American Indian with ties to Robeson County. He has donated over 200 paintings which have brought in over $100,000 for various childrens charities, mostly Native. His father was born and raised in Pembroke and was, as Screaming Eagle says, "a true giver" for whom he is thankful for passing on to him the desire to give to others. His father died in l998, and Screaming Eagle describes him as his "closest and dearest friend and confidante whom the Good Lord is looking after." Screaming Eagle has donated a painting to the American Indian Mothers, a non-profit organization of women have incorporated and annually host memorial programs and activities to give honor to the memory of outstanding mothers and women who have given service to their respective tribes and communities. The annual Fundraiser and MemorialScholarship Banquet is schedule for Friday, May 7 at 6:30 PM at the Southeastern Farmers Market in Lumberton. Memorial scholarships have been established in honor of Brenda Brewington Brooks, Delora Jane Brewington Locklear and Brigette Brayboy Cummings. Other families are invited to establish memorial scholarship and to nominate women fo awards in education, government, business, health services, public service, cultural awareness, and an American Indian Youth Award. 2004 will be the first Screaming Eagle Scholarship Award for an applicant from either a single parent family or a family in which one parent is currently incarcerated.
