A recent article in the Daily Reflector, Greenville, NC by Alvin Taylor illuminated pride in the past as well as the present. Reporting that North Carolina's public and private universities produce about 3,100 teachers a year; only 2,200 of whom teach in North Carolina, and one in three leaving the public schools after 3 years on the job and 40% departing after 5 years, Mr. Taylor expressed pride in the history of East Carolina University. He stated, "it makes one proud to live in proximity to East Carolina University, which diversified as it is now, was founded as a teachers training shool, then became a college dedicated to public education." He further states, "It was my good fortune to attend the campus laboratory school first known as Training School and later Wahl-Coates. By the time I entered school and attended seventh grade at the lab school, the college began offering nonteaching degrees, but public education was still the main thrust of ECTC." Today, East Carolina University has an exceptional medical school, a promising engineering degree program and numerous efforts underway to improve life in eastern North Carolina. Mr. Taylor stated, I'm excited as anyone about these fascinating developments, but even as these initiatives grow and set high standards, the university should never fail to live up to its great heritage of service to education in North Carolina."
