I strongly agree with the accountability requirements for both educational institutions and the students receiving these funds. Our tribe provides scholarships for students, but fail to follow up on the progress of these students as closely as we should.. During the summer, the tribe sponsors a camp for our youth (grades 3-8) that focuses on our history and culture. Both recipients for our scholarships this year have served as counselors for this youth camp. I attend the conference at UNC-Chapel Hill each spring that addresses retention of Indian Students. There is definitely a need for both the universities and the tribes to support and provide follow-up with these college students. As a retired educator I see the importance of both parents and students being informed early on about the academic and social preparation that will enhance the chances of students being successful at the college level. I agree with the author that getting students into college is only part of the challenge. Retention is just as vital if we are to have students graduating and going out into society to make an impact. Sue Vernon Education Committee Sappony Tribe
