The following e-mail was received and posted for review and information of all Lumbee: According to an article in the Greensboro News andRecord (December 21, 2003) the federal government has given the Lumbee Indian tribe renewed access to a $12 million grant after the tribe completed an environmental reviedw of its proposed housing projects. The tribe had been allowed since October to use just 20 percent of the grant until it met the requirements set by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development. The tribe failed to submit the review by its July deadline and fialed to publish the results of the environmental review. The grant is helping to pay for housing for members of the tribe. Jimmy Hunt, chairman of the tribe's housing committee, said he is pleased about the money being released. I would like to know who was asleep at the wheel by not submitting the review and publishing the results of the environmental review, thereby causing the delay in accessibility to the entire grant on a timely basis. It appears to me that someone is not doing their job or at least do not understand what they job is. Believe me, if it was my responsbility to fill ou the proper forms and mail them, they would have been mailed on a timely basis. Mr. Hunt may be pleased about the money being released, but there are people whose lives are affected that are not pleased that the money was held up in the first place.
