LUMBEE TRIBAL COUNCIL SWEARING-IN CEREMONY The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina welcomed their new Chairman, Mr. Jimmy Goins and their new council members at the Tribal Council Swearing-In Ceremony and Annual Meeting at the Southeastern Agricultural Center Farmer’s Market on January 15, 2004. The event was plush and full of motivational speeches that marked positives in the tribal administration of the Lumbee nation. Many dignitaries were in attendance such as Congressman Mike McIntyre, a representative from Elizabeth Dole’s office, the Lumbee ambassadors, Miss Indian North Carolina, Miss NCNAYO, and many others. Then ceremony was contemporary as well as traditional beginning with a blessing ceremony given by Mr. Tony Littleturtle and ending appropriately with a victory song by Southern Sun, a traditional southeastern drum group. The Honorable Henry Oxendine and the Honorable Judge Gary Locklear gave the oaths of office to the new council members and the new chairman, respectively. Each oath was prefaced with strong remarks that challenge each individual person to grow together in strength and honor for the betterment of the Lumbee nation as a whole. Chairman Goins took the stage with a presence that represented strength, determination, and dedication. Darlene Jacobs, tribal administrator, stated, “The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina greatly appreciates your participation in the Swearing-In Ceremony for the Lumbee Tribal Council. Without your involvement and contributions this historical event would not have been possible.” The ceremony proved to be a positive event that hopefully is an indication of the successful years to come for the Lumbee Tribal Council.
