Lumbee Teachers continue to demonstrate that given an opportunity, they can excel at the national level and evidence their commitment to quality education and continued service in the Lumbee Community. On Monday, February 9, the Board of Education of the Public Schools of Robeso County recognized the following Lumbee Indian teachers: Yvonne Chavis of Pembroke elementary, Phoebe Chavis-Harris of Union chapel Elementary, Yvonne Barnes-Dial of Purnell Swett High, Wanda Brewer of St. Pauls High, and Velinda Locklear of Pembroke Middle. All we have to do now is recruit more Indians into teaching and get them enrolled in college and in teacher education program. Once we can do that, the rest is reach for the sky!
